Best Railings for Coastal NJ Homes
Salt is the enemy
At the Shore, salt spray and humidity attack every metal finish. The wrong specification will rust within two seasons no matter how much you paid.
What works
- Powder-coated marine-grade aluminum (6061 or 6063).
- 316 stainless steel hardware (never 304).
- Non-ferrous anchors in concrete (stainless or brass).
- Tempered glass with 316 standoffs.
What fails fast on the coast
- Standard steel pickets, even if powder coated.
- 304 stainless hardware (will show tea stains in year one).
- Cast iron or wrought iron near the water.
- Galvanized fasteners in salt air.
Design choices we recommend
- Glass panel railings for unobstructed ocean views.
- Marine aluminum cable systems for modern decks.
- Picket aluminum with satin bronze for traditional cottages.
Finish spec
Ask for AAMA 2605 rated powder coat. It is the specification used on high end marine aluminum and exceeds regular AAMA 2604 in salt-spray testing. Non-marine powder finishes are the most common reason Shore railings fail early.
Maintenance
Rinse the railing with fresh water once a week during peak summer. A 5 minute rinse wipes away salt crust and doubles finish life.
