Winter Prep for Outdoor Railings in NJ
The 15 minute fall checklist
- Rinse every run with a garden hose.
- Wipe with a microfiber cloth and mild soap.
- Inspect every post base for movement.
- Check every fastener for rust bleed.
- Touch up any paint chips with manufacturer-matched touch-up pen.
Snow and ice
- Use a plastic or rubber snow shovel, not metal.
- Never chip ice with a hammer. Use a plastic scraper.
- De-icing salts (calcium chloride, rock salt) pit aluminum and etch stainless. Use pet safe de-icers that are chloride free, like urea or alfalfa meal pellets, near railings.
Freeze-thaw cycles
Water intrusion into post bases is the number one winter killer of aluminum railings. Make sure:
- Post caps are fully seated and silicone sealed.
- Base plates have weep holes that are clear.
- Concrete cracks near posts are caulked.
Surface finish
Powder coat laughs at NJ winter. Painted finishes do not. If you are still on paint, apply a marine wax coat before first snow.
Wood top rails
If your aluminum rail has a wood cap, re-seal with exterior polyurethane before November. Left unsealed it will check and rot within two winters.
Spring check
Early April, do the same routine in reverse. Rinse all salt residue, tighten any loose hardware from freeze-thaw movement, and touch up any new chips.
